Biotechnology has become an area of focus and interest globally. Litha has identified this as an opportunity by establishing the Litha Biotech division. This division is currently focused on the development as well as the distribution of vaccines. It has a stake in an established public private partnership (PPP) between the South African Government and The Biovac Consortium called The Biovac Institute to produce paediatric vaccines.

Manufacturing facilities are currently under construction and are on track for completion by 2012 and for manufacture by 2013. These capabilities have been established by attracting the appropriate skills as well as technology transfers from international companies to its Cape Town facility.

As part of the infrastructural capacity contribution to the country, The Biovac Institute will provide universities and other biotechnology firms with a platform through which products, at pilot scale, can be manufactured for upscaling to clinical phase.

Part of the in-house resource which supports the cold chain storage and distribution of vaccines, is Litha Medical Logistics. This Cold Chain Management system has been customised for the transportation and storage of vaccines within a safe and recommended temperature range.

Litha Vaccines is a wholly-owned subsidiary operating under Litha Biotech and is a wholesaler in the private sector of adult and paediatric vaccines as well as providing adult vaccines to the government through tenders.

Litha Biotech is made up of the following business units:
